US President Donald Trump has described the newly concluded trade agreement with India as a “historic deal” that will substantially increase American coal exports. Speaking at a press briefing, Trump highlighted the United States’ position as the world’s leading energy producer and emphasised the country’s growing role as a major energy exporter.
“America is now the number one energy producer in the world,” Trump said, adding that recent trade deals with countries including Japan, Korea, and India would dramatically expand US coal exports. He also noted that American coal is considered among the highest quality globally.
The announcement followed the release of a fact sheet by Washington outlining the “path forward” under the new trade deal. The interim agreement, finalised after nearly a year of negotiations beginning in February 2025, was confirmed last week following a phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump. Both leaders finalised the framework for the interim pact during the call.
Under the agreement, US duties on a range of Indian exports will be lowered from 50% to 18%, providing significant relief to Indian producers. The reduced tariffs will cover key sectors including textiles and garments, leather and footwear, plastic and rubber products, organic chemicals, home décor items, artisanal goods, and certain machinery categories.
The trade talks had previously stalled after the Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on imports from India, citing concerns that India was indirectly supporting Russia’s war effort in Ukraine. Earlier, a 25% duty was introduced in August, escalating tensions between the two trading partners. Multiple negotiation rounds in recent months helped pave the way for the current interim agreement.
Analysts expect the pact to strengthen bilateral trade, expand export opportunities for US energy products, and foster closer economic ties between the two nations. By addressing longstanding trade barriers, both countries aim to create a more balanced and mutually beneficial commercial relationship moving forward.
