Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are locked in a tight 2024 presidential race, with US voters casting ballots on Tuesday, November 5. Both candidates received three votes each in Dixville Notch, a small New Hampshire town traditionally voting just after midnight. In 2020, President Joe Biden had secured every vote in this community, giving a slight initial edge to Trump in this year’s contest.
In his final campaign speech in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Trump targeted the Democratic Party. Emphasizing his opposition beyond Harris herself, he claimed, “I’m running against an entire system led by evil people.”
Meanwhile, Harris wrapped up her campaign in Philadelphia, calling for unity and cooperation. She pledged to address voters’ concerns by seeking practical solutions and listening to a diverse range of voices, including those who disagree with her. “Real leaders create room for differing views,” she stated, promising a balanced approach if elected.
Polls reveal that Trump holds a slight advantage in all key swing states. According to an AtlasIntel poll conducted on November 1 and 2, Trump leads with 49%, while Harris is close behind at 47.2%, though the results fall within the margin of error. The poll involved approximately 2,500 likely voters, mainly women, and indicates Trump’s edge in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
In contrast, an October 29 Reuters/Ipsos poll put Harris narrowly ahead, with a 44% to 43% lead over Trump. Another survey from The New York Times and Siena College showed Harris leading in states like Nevada, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, while Trump is slightly favored in Arizona.
With a close race, recounts may be required, especially in swing states. Over 100 pre-election lawsuits have already been filed by Republican factions. Although the 2020 election was held on November 3, it took until November 7 for Biden to be declared the winner, suggesting that this year’s results may similarly take time to finalize.
