In a strong early endorsement, the Indian American Impact Fund has thrown its support behind Dr. Tina Shah, a physician and former White House official, for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. The fund, which is dedicated to empowering South Asian and Indian American candidates across the U.S., praised Shah as “the right leader at a critical moment.”
Shah, who previously served in the Obama and Biden administrations, announced her candidacy on July 1 and made headlines by raising a remarkable $260,000 on her first day in the race. Her campaign is focused on challenging Rep. Tom Kean Jr., a Republican currently serving his second term representing the Westfield-based district. The contest is part of the high-stakes 2026 midterm elections.
Chintan Patel, executive director of the Indian American Impact Fund, stated that Shah brings the ideal mix of “compassion, courage, and expertise,” particularly highlighting her healthcare background. “As a physician, she understands the everyday impact of reckless policymaking,” he said, calling out Kean’s recent vote for a budget plan that slashes Medicaid funding and risks millions losing coverage. “With rising medical disinformation, this isn’t just about politics—it’s about lives,” he added.
Shah’s candidacy adds to a growing field of Democrats hoping to flip the seat. Other contenders in the primary include former Navy pilot Rebecca Bennett, Michael Roth, a fellow Biden administration alum, business executive Brian Varella, and ex-Summit Councilman Greg Vartan. The primary will take place in June 2026.
In response to the endorsement, Shah expressed gratitude, saying the Impact Fund’s work in mobilizing South Asian communities nationwide has been “game-changing.” If successful, she would make history as the first Indian American to represent New Jersey in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Patel emphasized the symbolic and strategic importance of her candidacy. “With the South Asian population growing in New Jersey, having a representative who shares our lived experiences matters. Tina Shah is prepared to be that transformative leader.”
As the campaign gains momentum, Shah’s public health credentials and strong early backing position her as a serious contender in one of New Jersey’s most watched congressional races.
