Zoya Akhtar’s film ‘The Archies’ has made its debut on Netflix, entering the array of Christmas releases this year. The movie effortlessly captures the festive spirit, drawing inspiration from the vibrant world of Archie’s comics. Zoya’s adept use of colorful palettes and costumes recreates the cheerful atmosphere of the comic, offering a sunny and joyful viewing experience.
Featuring a lineup of budding talents, predominantly star kids, the film introduces Suhana Khan as Veronica Lodge, Khushi Kapoor as Betty Cooper, Agastya Nanda as Archie Andrews, Vedang Raina as Reggie, Mihir Ahuja as Jughead, Dot as Ethel, and Yuvraj Menda as Dilton Doiley. While the ensemble is noteworthy, the movie falls short of being exceptional, appearing as a safe launch for these star kids. Their performances shine, serving as the movie’s saving grace amid a basic storyline.
Unlike Zoya Akhtar’s previous films like Gully Boy or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, ‘The Archies’ lacks the wow factor. However, its light-hearted and straightforward nature makes it a decent watch, with the actors skillfully handling their roles. Particularly, Suhana Khan and Khushi Kapoor deliver standout performances. Suhana embodies Veronica Lodge’s energy with a conventional portrayal, while Khushi’s nuanced flexibility in portraying Betty adds a sweet and simple dimension, especially commendable in depicting Betty’s crush on Archie.
