Indian American Congressman Shri Thanedar has expressed strong support for President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign. As a first-term Congressman from Michigan’s Detroit area, a critical battleground state, Thanedar’s endorsement is particularly noteworthy.
Among the five Indian American Congressmen in the House of Representatives – Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal, Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Shri Thanedar – Thanedar is the first to publicly endorse Biden following his recent debate setback in Atlanta.
The debate resulted in a dip in Biden’s approval ratings and increased calls from within his party for him to consider withdrawing from the race. A win for Biden in Michigan could be crucial in his challenging contest against Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Reflecting on his interactions with Biden, Thanedar shared, “A few months ago, I was just 20 feet away from President Biden as he detailed his vision for our country for nearly an hour. I’ve had several one-on-one conversations with him where he spoke warmly about Detroit and showed a deep understanding of our challenges. He remains the same effective leader we elected in 2020.”
Thanedar emphasized Biden’s achievements in his first term, such as record infrastructure spending, significant investments in semiconductors and supply chains through the CHIPS Act, lowering insulin costs, and passing the first major gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. He acknowledged that more needs to be done, particularly in areas like housing, and stressed the importance of increased federal investment.
Thanedar emphasized that much work remains to be done and highlighted the need for more federal investment, particularly in housing. He expressed a clear preference for President Biden, believing that Biden would bring more federal funds to their district, unlike Trump, who he said would continue to provide tax breaks to the wealthy. Thanedar declared his full support for President Biden as the best choice for the 13th District.
