Dr. Swati Dhingra has been reappointed for a second term as an external member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). She will continue in the role until August 8, 2028, having initially been appointed on August 9, 2022.
Speaking to the media, Dhingra noted a divide among policymakers regarding interest rate cuts. She highlighted that even with 0.25 percentage point reductions every quarter throughout 2025, monetary policy would still be too restrictive by the end of the year.
A prominent economist, Dhingra is an Associate Professor at the London School of Economics (LSE) and an Associate at the Centre for Economic Performance. She also serves as a Director of The Royal Mint Museum and is a member of the UK’s Economy 2030 Inquiry Steering Group.
Her career includes contributions to the UK’s Trade Modelling Review Expert Panel and the LSE’s Economic Diplomacy Commission. Since January 1, 2023, she has been the Director of the Review of Economic Studies.
Dhingra holds degrees from the University of Delhi and the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was a post-doctoral fellow at Princeton University. Her research, backed by institutions such as ESRC and UKRI, earned the ONS Research Excellence People’s Choice Award in 2019.
Additionally, she was elected to the Royal Economic Society’s Council in 2021 and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of International Economics and the Review of Economic Studies.
