As per a report, Suzuki Motor of Japan is planning to export Electric Vehicles (EVs) produced at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant in India to Japan by 2025. This is part of Suzuki’s strategy to position India as a global hub for electric car manufacturing. Additionally, Suzuki is exploring the possibility of supplying India-made EVs to Toyota Motor for the European market.
Besides distributing these EVs under its own brand in Europe, Suzuki is contemplating collaboration with a Japanese competitor to sell these vehicles through a joint venture, where they would be branded as Toyota vehicles.
Suzuki’s commitment to India’s electric vehicle industry was evident with a significant investment announcement of Rs. 10,440 crore (US$ 1.25 billion) last year. Part of this investment, Rs. 3,100 crore (US$ 372.3 million), is allocated for expanding the production capacity of electric vehicles at Suzuki Motor Gujarat by 2025, while Rs. 7,300 crore (US$ 876.6 million) is designated for establishing a battery manufacturing plant for electric vehicles by 2026. Additionally, the remaining funds will be used by Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu to set up a car recycling facility by 2025.
This initiative received official recognition on March 19, 2022, at the India-Japan Economic Forum in New Delhi, where Suzuki Motor Corporation signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the State of Gujarat in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Mr. Fumio Kishida.
