Senator Susan Collins of Maine reaffirmed her endorsement of former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley for president, even though Haley is no longer a contender for the Republican nomination. Collins told reporters that she plans to write in Haley’s name on her ballot in November instead of voting for former President Trump or President Biden. This plan was confirmed by Collins’ office to Fox News Digital.
According to local CBS reporter Dan Lampariello, Collins’ spokesperson noted that she had previously declared her support for Haley over Trump. Collins announced that she would not cast her vote for either candidate, opting instead to write Nikki Haley’s name on the ballot.
Senator Collins had endorsed Haley late in the Republican primary, praising her as “extremely well-qualified” and possessing the necessary energy, intellect, and temperament for leadership. Despite Haley’s subsequent exit from the race, Collins’ stance remained unchanged.
Collins, who voted to convict Trump on the second impeachment charges in 2021, reiterated her inability to support him, stating, “I cannot support former President Trump.” This conviction vote was related to the charges of inciting the January 6 Capitol insurrection.
As Trump emerged as the clear Republican nominee set to face Biden, Collins’ position did not waver. Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital for comment.
