Suhas Subramanyam, a 37-year-old Indian-American politician, is on the verge of making history once again. With a promising political career, Subramanyam is now a frontrunner to win a seat in the United States House of Representatives from Virginia’s 10th Congressional District in the upcoming November election. If successful, he will be the first Indian-American from the East Coast and only the seventh overall to hold such a position.
Subramanyam, no stranger to breaking barriers, made headlines in 2020 when he became the first Indian-American to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates in its 400-year history. Reflecting on his journey, Subramanyam recalled the impact his election had on Indian-American families and how it inspired many to pursue politics. “When I first got elected, I didn’t fully grasp the significance. But seeing so many Indian-American families attend my swearing-in made me realize this was bigger than just me,” he noted.
Now, he’s determined to be a strong advocate for Indian-Americans, ensuring they feel genuinely represented in the political arena. Subramanyam has pledged to focus on key issues such as the economy and healthcare costs for his constituents.
His rise coincides with an increasing number of Indian-origin politicians, including Vice President Kamala Harris and several US Representatives, gaining prominence in American politics. Should he win, Subramanyam’s election will further bolster this growing community of Indian-American lawmakers.
