In a recent interview, Congress leader Sam Pitroda stirred controversy by drawing comparisons between Indians from different regions and various ethnic groups like Chinese, Arabs, Whites, and Africans while discussing diversity and democracy in India. He emphasized the unity of Indians despite their physical appearances, stating that regardless of regional differences, they are all interconnected as brothers and sisters. However, his remarks triggered a strong reaction, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemning them as racist and unacceptable.
Prime Minister Modi criticized Pitroda’s statement during a rally in Telangana, expressing anger and emphasizing that such attitudes toward fellow citizens based on skin color are intolerable. He linked Pitroda’s remarks to Congress’s political decisions, particularly regarding the 2022 presidential election and the treatment of Droupadi Murmu, suggesting an influence from overseas advisors on Congress leadership.
The backlash extended beyond political circles, with individuals like Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut condemning Pitroda’s comments as divisive and offensive. BJP leaders, including Ravi Shankar Prasad and CR Kesavan, labeled Pitroda’s remarks as evidence of his disconnect from the realities of India and criticized his association with Congress leadership.
In response to the uproar, the Congress party distanced itself from Pitroda’s statements, describing them as unfortunate and unacceptable. This isn’t the first time Pitroda has sparked controversy; his previous endorsement of an inheritance tax was also met with criticism from the BJP, who accused Congress of promoting wealth redistribution.
Pitroda clarified that his remarks were taken out of context and were not indicative of any party policy. Nonetheless, the incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding discussions of diversity and identity in Indian politics.
