The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) has recognized Congressman Ami Bera, MD (CA-D), with the 2025 Legislative Champion Award for his bipartisan dedication to advancing nuclear medicine research. The award was presented at SNMMI’s Hill Day on March 26, 2025.
Congressman Bera played a crucial role in securing language within the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Fiscal Year 2024 funding legislation, emphasizing the importance of nuclear medicine research in the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). His efforts have contributed to enhancing medical outcomes for service members while helping reduce the DoD’s financial strain related to cancer treatment.
Representing Sacramento County in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2013, Bera serves California’s 6th Congressional District, which encompasses areas east and north of Sacramento. Before his tenure in Congress, he had a two-decade-long medical career focused on improving healthcare accessibility, quality, and affordability. He also served as Sacramento County’s Chief Medical Officer, using his expertise to advocate for community well-being.
As the longest-serving Indian American in Congress, Bera has consistently prioritized public health initiatives, ensuring that research and innovation in nuclear medicine receive the necessary support.
SNMMI, an international organization dedicated to nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, and theranostics, expressed gratitude to Congressman Bera on behalf of its 15,000 members. The organization remains committed to advancing precision medicine, enabling tailored diagnostics and treatments for better patient outcomes.
