Indian American physician Sion Roy has officially launched his campaign for California State Senate, aiming to represent District 24, which includes West Los Angeles and Santa Monica. A seasoned cardiologist and vice chair of the Santa Monica College Board, Roy is stepping up to fill the seat currently held by Sen. Ben Allen, who will be leaving office in 2026 due to term limits.
Roy, 44, has made healthcare accessibility, education, and disaster recovery central themes of his campaign. Having lost his family home in the Palisades fire, he understands the challenges faced by local residents. He vows to streamline bureaucratic processes in Sacramento and secure funding to help rebuild affected communities. “I am facing the same struggles as my constituents, and I am committed to finding real solutions,” he emphasized.
A dedicated public health advocate, Roy is an associate professor at Harbor UCLA Public Hospital in Torrance, where he has mentored aspiring medical professionals while improving care for underserved communities. He also made history as the youngest president of the Los Angeles County Medical Association. His leadership was instrumental during the COVID-19 pandemic, advising policymakers on equitable healthcare strategies.
Elected to the Santa Monica College Board in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, Roy has championed workforce development programs, including Certified Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide training. He also played a key role in the launch of Santa Monica College’s Malibu campus. His passion for education extends to K-12 initiatives, where he served as PTA President at Webster Elementary in Malibu and was pivotal in passing Measure MM to enhance local schools.
Roy’s academic journey includes earning a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and an M.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Before medical school, he dedicated a year to AmeriCorps, strengthening his commitment to public service. He now resides in Malibu with his wife, Kathy, and their son, Kiran, and remains steadfast in his mission to bring meaningful change to California.
