Former US Marine intelligence officer Grant Newsham has highlighted the significant role played by Sergio Gor, the newly appointed US Ambassador to India, in bolstering bilateral relations. Speaking a day after India and the US finalised a trade agreement, Newsham emphasised that Gor’s influence with former President Trump and his choice to serve in India underscores the strategic importance Washington places on the partnership.
Newsham noted that very few ambassadors have the ability to directly communicate with the US President, and Gor’s selection reflects both his personal preference for India and his high standing within the administration. This appointment, according to Newsham, sends a strong positive signal for India-US relations and demonstrates that India is regarded as a key partner in the region.
Interestingly, Newsham pointed out that India’s limited mention in certain US policy documents can actually be interpreted as a positive sign. Countries that face US criticism are often highlighted in these reports, while India’s absence indicates trust and recognition of its solid standing.
Newsham also underlined India’s strategic value, particularly in countering risks posed by Communist China. He observed that India is considered a reliable power in the region, having a long history of managing tensions with China, and that the US recognises India’s military capabilities and resolve. The deepening defence collaboration, including US naval vessels undergoing repairs in Indian ports, further illustrates the trust between the two nations.
In addition to defence ties, Newsham noted that intelligence sharing, technology co-production, and broader strategic engagement have advanced significantly. While trade issues exist, he emphasised that the overall India-US relationship remains strong, built on mutual recognition of each country’s national interests.
Newsham concluded that despite occasional political or diplomatic distractions, the foundation of the India-US partnership is robust. He stressed that assessing the relationship through the lens of shared strategic priorities reveals a much more stable and constructive alliance than headline disagreements might suggest.
This perspective reinforces the view that Ambassador Sergio Gor’s tenure will likely strengthen bilateral diplomacy, trade, and defence cooperation, positioning India as a trusted partner in advancing regional stability and global strategic interests.
