Sean Desai, an Indian American coach, who served as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator for just one season, is anticipated to join the Los Angeles Rams in a senior defensive capacity. The son of immigrants, Desai made history as the NFL’s first Indian American coordinator. He is set to face his former team when the Eagles play in Los Angeles during the 2024 season.
Desai’s departure from Philadelphia came after the team ranked 30th in points allowed during the 2023 NFL season. Despite overall struggles, the Eagles’ defense performed relatively well in limiting rushing yards and touchdown runs, finishing 10th in both categories, as reported by CBS Sports.
Before his stint with the Eagles, Desai spent six seasons with the Bears in various coaching roles, including defensive quality control coach and safeties coach, before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2021. During his tenure, the Bears’ defense ranked third in the league in passing yards allowed.
In 2022, Desai served as the Seahawks’ associate head coach and defensive assistant before joining the Eagles. His move to Philadelphia coincided with Jonathan Gannon’s departure to become the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
Joining the Rams, Desai will contribute to a defense that ranked 19th in points allowed in the 2023 season. The team is anchored by Aaron Donald, a perennial Pro Bowler known for his dominance on the defensive line.
Desai’s coaching journey began at Temple University, where he served as a graduate assistant while pursuing a doctorate in educational administration. He transitioned to the NFL in 2013 as a quality control coach with the Bears, eventually ascending to roles like safeties coach and defensive coordinator.
In Chicago, Desai worked under esteemed defensive coaches like Vic Fangio and Chuck Pagano, contributing to the team’s strong defensive performances over the years.
