Two Indian American chefs, Sujan Sarkar from Chicago and Arvinder Vilkhu from New Orleans, stand out as finalists for the esteemed James Beard Awards, recognizing exemplary chefs who demonstrate culinary prowess, leadership, and commitment to fostering a sustainable work culture and community impact.
The nominees for these prestigious awards, which highlight talent and dedication to equity, sustainability, and community, were recently announced in a live ceremony at Waldorf Astoria, Washington DC. Winners in various culinary and food media categories will be unveiled at a gala event in Chicago on June 10.
Sarkar, representing the Great Lakes region, helms Indienne in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, blending traditional and modern elements to elevate Indian cuisine. With a vision to redefine Indian dining as a sophisticated experience, Sarkar brings a wealth of culinary expertise gained from renowned establishments worldwide.
Having grown up near Kolkata with a familial connection to agriculture, Sarkar honed his craft under esteemed mentors before venturing into restaurant ownership, with ventures like Rooh and Baar Baar gaining acclaim across the US. His latest endeavor, Indienne, earned a Michelin star within a year of its opening.
Vilkhu, known as ‘Dickey,’ boasts a four-decade-long career in the food and beverage industry, marked by a passion for hospitality cultivated from a young age. His journey from India to New Orleans saw him garnering experience in prestigious hotels before venturing into entrepreneurship with Saffron Nola and Saffron Caterers.
Combining South Asian and Louisiana influences, Saffron garnered acclaim for its innovative cuisine, prompting its evolution from a catering service to a brick-and-mortar establishment in 2017. Guided by Vilkhu’s dedication to precision and hospitality, Saffron remains a testament to culinary excellence and cultural fusion under the stewardship of the Vilkhu family.
