Sanjay Virmani, a seasoned FBI official, has been appointed by Director Christopher Wray as the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division at the Washington field office. Formerly the deputy assistant director in the Counterterrorism Division at FBI Headquarters in Washington, DC, Virmani brings extensive experience to his new role.
Beginning his career as a special agent in 2003, Virmani worked on terrorist and cyber cases at the FBI’s San Francisco field office. His dedication led to his promotion to supervisory special agent in the Counterterrorism Division in 2007. In 2010, he assumed the role of supervisory special agent in charge of the Joint Terrorism Task Force in the Oakland Resident Agency, overseeing investigations into international terrorism.
In 2013, Virmani became the director of the INTERPOL Digital Crime Center at the INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation in Singapore, managing operational support for INTERPOL’s 190 member nations in combating cybercrime. Returning to FBI headquarters in 2016, he served as unit chief of the Cyberterrorism unit, targeting global cyber terrorists and their networks.
Rejoining the counterterrorism division in 2021, Virmani served as section chief of the Strategic Partner Engagement Section, overseeing liaison activities on counterterrorism-related concerns with law enforcement, US interagency, and private sector partners. In 2022, he also acted as the special agent overseeing the Tampa Field Office.
Virmani holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Naval Postgraduate School and a bachelor’s in industrial engineering from California State Polytechnic University.
