Sal Khan, the founder of the nonprofit educational platform Khan Academy, will deliver the commencement address at Johns Hopkins University’s ceremony on May 22, 2025. Khan, whose journey began in 2004 tutoring his cousin remotely, transitioned from a hedge fund analyst to a full-time educator in 2009, ultimately creating a platform now used by over 170 million people worldwide.
Khan’s impact on education is reflected in the millions of students who use his platform, including members of the Class of 2025. Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels praised Khan’s innovative approach to learning and its global impact, noting that Khan’s work embodies the university’s mission of bringing knowledge to the world.
Khan is also focusing on AI to transform education. In his book, Brave New Words: How AI Will Revolutionize Education, he explores how AI can personalize learning and help teachers focus on hands-on teaching. During the commencement ceremony, Khan will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, marking his significant contributions to education.
