The sacred Hindu month of Sawan, also known as Shravan, began this week and continues until August 9, 2025, ending with Sawan Purnima. Deeply revered by devotees of Lord Shiva, this month is dedicated to spiritual discipline, simplicity, and sacred rituals.
Sawan is considered highly auspicious, especially Mondays (Sawan Somwar), which are devoted entirely to Shiva. Millions of worshippers observe fasts, visit temples, and engage in prayer and meditation to seek blessings and inner peace.
This month is not just about rituals—it’s a call to live mindfully and lead a purer life. Here are the Dos and Don’ts every devotee should follow during Sawan:
✅ Dos During Sawan
- Fast on Mondays – Observing fasts during Sawan Somwar is believed to earn the blessings of Lord Shiva. Some fast for the entire day, others eat once after sundown.
- Offer Bel Leaves, Milk, and Water – Pouring milk or Gangajal over a Shiva lingam and offering Bilva leaves is a sacred act of devotion.
- Chant Shiva Mantras – Reciting “Om Namah Shivaya” or the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra daily purifies the mind and soul.
- Wear Light-Colored, Modest Clothing – White, yellow, or saffron attire symbolizes purity and devotion.
- Visit Shiva Temples – Daily darshan (visits) and evening aartis are considered highly meritorious.
- Read or Listen to Shiva Purana – Engage with spiritual texts that honor Lord Shiva’s life and teachings.
- Practice Self-Discipline – Maintain calmness, avoid gossip, and engage in service to others.
❌ Don’ts During Sawan
- Avoid Non-Vegetarian Food and Alcohol – Consumption of meat, eggs, and alcohol is strictly prohibited.
- Refrain from Garlic and Onion – Even vegetarians avoid tamasic foods like onion and garlic, believed to agitate the mind.
- No Haircuts or Shaving – These acts are traditionally avoided during holy months as a sign of respect and austerity.
- Don’t Wear Black – Black is seen as inauspicious during this sacred period; instead, opt for bright, peaceful colors.
- Avoid Anger and Negative Thoughts – Emotional discipline is key; steer clear of arguments, jealousy, and grudges.
- Don’t Break Your Fast Carelessly – If you’re fasting, breaking it improperly or eating forbidden foods can defeat its purpose.
- Stay Away from Intoxication and Immoral Acts – Smoking, gambling, and any immoral behavior are to be avoided completely.
Sawan is not just about ritual—it’s about reconnecting with your inner self through purity, peace, and devotion. Whether you fast, chant, or simply practice kindness, each act brings you closer to divine consciousness and the energy of Lord Shiva.
