Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, during his visit to New Delhi, referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “friend” and expressed enthusiasm for Modi’s vision for India. Sunak, accompanied by his family, had an extensive discussion with PM Modi on various subjects during their meeting on Tuesday evening.
Following their interaction, PM Modi described Sunak as a valued ally of India, emphasizing his commitment to fostering even stronger India-UK relations. Taking to social media platform X, Modi shared, “It was a pleasure meeting former UK PM Rishi Sunak and his family! We had a great conversation covering a range of topics. Mr. Sunak is a true friend of India and deeply passionate about enhancing India-UK ties.”
Responding to Modi’s message, Sunak reaffirmed his strong rapport with the Indian leader. He expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and reiterated the importance of strengthening the UK-India partnership. “Wonderful to catch up with my friend Narendra Modi. Thank you for warmly welcoming my family! Always exciting to hear your vision for India, and crucial that UK-India ties continue to strengthen,” Sunak posted on X.
Born to Indian-origin parents from Punjab, Sunak made history as the first person of Indian descent to serve as the UK Prime Minister from 2022 to 2024. Throughout his tenure, he championed closer India-UK relations, particularly in economic, security, and scientific sectors. His leadership saw increased cooperation in finance, technology, healthcare, and education, including the establishment of the FinTech Bridge connecting London and Mumbai.
After Sunak’s Conservative Party lost the UK general election in July 2024, PM Modi acknowledged his contributions to strengthening India-UK relations. “Thank you, Rishi Sunak, for your remarkable leadership in the UK and your significant efforts to deepen India-UK ties. Wishing you and your family the best for the future,” Modi posted on X on July 5, 2024.
Sunak had also extended his congratulations to Modi on the BJP-led NDA’s third consecutive election victory, emphasizing that the UK and India share a deep-rooted friendship set to thrive.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, Sunak recognized India’s growing global influence, calling it an “economic superpower” alongside Indonesia and Nigeria. In May 2024, he highlighted how emerging economies like India are playing a key role in reshaping the global economic landscape.
