Clemson University has named Ramesh Jeganathan as the new chair of its Department of Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences (FNPS), ushering in a fresh phase of leadership for one of the university’s most interdisciplinary and high-impact departments.
Jeganathan joins Clemson from Auburn University, bringing over 25 years of academic and administrative experience. His prior roles include serving as the Bruno Endowed Professor of Nutrition, graduate program director, interim co-associate dean for research and graduate studies, and Southeastern Conference provost fellow.
“I am honored to lead FNPS at Clemson,” Jeganathan said. “Clemson’s mission as a land-grant institution—merging education, research, and community outreach—aligns closely with my professional vision. This is a meaningful opportunity to guide a department that bridges science and industry to create positive community impact.”
His leadership approach emphasizes collaboration, transparency, and shared governance. Jeganathan plans to start by engaging with faculty, staff, students, and administrators to understand the department’s culture, aspirations, and priorities.
Key initiatives under his leadership will include:
- Supporting faculty growth and mentorship
- Strengthening research programs
- Enhancing student outcomes and success
- Expanding graduate-level programs
- Encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration
- Building stronger partnerships with industry, government, and alumni
“I am dedicated to fostering a vibrant academic environment that enhances FNPS’s visibility, impact, and external funding opportunities,” he added. “Mentorship remains central to my leadership, and I aim to support both students and faculty in achieving their professional objectives.”
Jeganathan also highlighted inclusivity and workplace respect, acknowledging the critical role of staff in departmental success. “This is a special chance to build on a strong foundation while exploring new growth opportunities,” he said. “It’s a privilege to contribute to FNPS’s continued journey. Go Tigers!”
Matthew “Matt” Holt, dean of Clemson’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences, praised Jeganathan’s extensive experience in academic leadership, strategic planning, and securing competitive research funding, noting that he is well-positioned to lead FNPS into a future of innovation and excellence.
