Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican presidential primary candidate, presented a set of “articles of independence” during a foreign policy speech in Ohio, his home state. Ramaswamy argued that the United States should no longer depend on hostile nations for its essential needs and outlined a plan to achieve economic independence from China while promoting American prosperity. He emphasized that these were concrete actions, not just wishful thinking.
Ramaswamy’s four proposed measures included an increase in defense spending, a reduction in reliance on China for pharmaceutical supplies (ranging from lifesaving drugs to everyday medicines), a declaration of independence from the climate agenda, and the establishment of semiconductor independence from Taiwan by manufacturing semiconductors domestically.
In addition to achieving economic independence from Communist China, Ramaswamy stressed that if he were elected as President in November 2024, he would prioritize reviving national pride and preventing the United States from entering World War III. He underlined the role of the U.S. president in these aspects, emphasizing the need to remove regulatory barriers that hinder economic growth under the executive branch.
Ramaswamy concluded by asserting that he would not rely on Congress to implement these changes during his presidency. He viewed promises contingent on Congress as false, stating that everything he proposed would be accomplished without the need for congressional permission or forgiveness. This highlighted his commitment to taking proactive steps towards economic independence and national security.
