Indian American Republican presidential primary candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy, shared insights into the profound impact of his Hindu faith on his campaign during the Family Leader’s Presidential Thanksgiving Forum in Des Moines, Iowa. Emphasizing the role of faith in his freedom, Ramaswamy expressed his belief in a singular God and underscored the moral duty ingrained in his faith.
Beyond the political arena, Ramaswamy opened up about personal struggles, revealing the emotional challenge of losing his first child in a miscarriage in 2015. He disclosed his wife’s, Dr. Apoorva Ramaswamy, subsequent experience with depression, shedding tears as he publicly addressed this previously undisclosed aspect of their lives.
Joined onstage by their three-year-old son, Ramaswamy recounted the difficulties of their second pregnancy, marked by a health scare. Apoorva had a pinprick incident during surgery, leading to the discovery of the patient’s hepatitis B and HIV positive status. Despite subsequent bleeding and fears of a second miscarriage, the couple’s faith sustained them. Their doctor found a heartbeat, and months later, they welcomed their rainbow baby, Kartik.
The forum, featuring Ramaswamy’s Republican rivals Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis, touched on personal challenges. Moderated by Family Leader president and CEO Bob Vander Plaats, it provided a platform for candid discussions, including Haley sharing her struggles with fertility and clarifying her stance on the abortion debate.
