Indian Railways has approved two key infrastructure projects in Gujarat and Bihar with a total investment of ₹6,475.8 million, aimed at improving connectivity, reducing congestion, and enhancing operational efficiency.
According to the Railway Ministry, the projects include the construction of a Rail Over Rail (RoR) flyover in Gujarat and a new rail bypass in Bihar.
In Gujarat, a ₹3,443.8 million project has been sanctioned to build a Rail Over Rail flyover at Kosamba. The structure will provide seamless connectivity to the Kosamba–Umrapada gauge conversion section, which spans 9.20 km under the Western Railway zone.
The section lies along the busy Mumbai–Vadodara main line and is currently undergoing gauge conversion. Due to the presence of the Dedicated Freight Corridor alignment, a direct surface crossing is not feasible. The RoR flyover will eliminate such crossings, ensuring smoother, safer, and uninterrupted train operations.
Meanwhile, in Bihar, a ₹3,032.0 million project has been approved for the construction of a 13.38 km rail bypass at Bhagalpur under the Eastern Railway zone. The bypass will connect Gonudham Halt on the Barahat–Bhagalpur section with Sabour on the Bhagalpur–Sahibganj route.
The project is expected to significantly ease congestion at Bhagalpur Junction, where the existing line is operating at more than 125 per cent capacity. Currently, trains require engine reversal at the station, causing delays and inefficiencies.
Once completed, the bypass will improve operational fluidity, reduce travel time, and enhance punctuality of train services in the region.
The Railway Ministry stated that these projects are part of a broader strategy to expand capacity, decongest critical routes, and meet the growing demand for passenger and freight transportation, while also improving overall safety and efficiency of the rail network.
