Indian-origin academic, Professor Neena Mitter, renowned for her pioneering work in sustainable agriculture, has been appointed as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Associate (Global Research) at Charles Sturt University, effective October 1, 2024. She will spearhead the university’s international research initiatives, bringing her vast experience in interdisciplinary collaborations.
Expressing her excitement for the role, Professor Mitter emphasized her dedication to fostering global research partnerships and driving innovation. She noted that Charles Sturt University’s commitment to education and research is instrumental in addressing challenges such as food security, rural healthcare, and sustainable agriculture.
Before joining Charles Sturt University, Professor Mitter was the founding Director of the Centre for Horticultural Science at the University of Queensland, where she played a pivotal role in advancing agricultural research from 2018 to 2024. Her accolades include numerous fellowships, patents, and awards, which have established her as a leader in sustainable crop protection.
One of her major contributions is the development of BioClay™, a groundbreaking technology aimed at protecting crops from pests like whitefly, a significant threat to global food production. This innovation has garnered international attention, with ongoing projects funded by the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund.
As she takes on her new role at Charles Sturt University, Professor Mitter aims to enhance the institution’s global research profile by forming partnerships, commercializing research, and advancing postgraduate programs. Her leadership is set to drive innovative, multidisciplinary initiatives that address regional and global challenges, solidifying the university’s position as a leader in sustainable agriculture and technological research.
