President Droupadi Murmu kicks off two-day Governors’ conference at Rashtrapati Bhavan. In her opening remarks, President Murmu emphasized that the conference’s agenda had been carefully selected to address key issues essential for achieving national objectives. She expressed confidence that the discussions would enrich the participants’ roles and enhance their effectiveness.
The conference also featured addresses from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Each leader highlighted the importance of Governors fulfilling their constitutional duties, including raising awareness about social welfare schemes and showcasing the development of the past decade. Prime Minister Modi urged the Governors to act as effective intermediaries between the central and state governments, especially in tribal areas, while Home Minister Shah encouraged them to visit villages and districts to build public trust.
President Murmu noted the advent of a new era in the justice system with the introduction of three new criminal justice laws: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. She stressed the importance of better coordination among central agencies across states to ensure smooth democratic functioning.
In her address, the President also underscored the value of quality higher education in fostering personal development, social change, innovation, and economic progress. She highlighted the role of the National Education Policy in enhancing the Accreditation and Assessment system and urged the Governors to support these reforms as chancellors of state universities.
Additionally, President Murmu emphasized the government’s focus on developing marginalized and tribal areas and encouraged the Governors to propose strategies for inclusive development. She advocated for harnessing youth energy through initiatives like the ‘MY Bharat’ campaign and the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ campaign to strengthen national unity and connectivity.
The conference includes breakaway sessions where subgroups of Governors, along with Union Ministers and ministry officials, will discuss specific agenda items. The outcomes of these discussions will be presented to the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, and other participants in the concluding session on August 3, 2024.
