President Droupadi Murmu met with her Malawian counterpart, Lazarus Chakwera, and signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during her visit. This trip marks the final leg of her three-nation tour, which included Algeria and Mauritania, taking place from October 13 to 19.
During their discussions on Friday, President Murmu and President Chakwera covered a wide array of topics, leading to the signing of MoUs focused on Arts and Culture, Youth Affairs, Sports, and Pharmaceutical Cooperation. Additionally, Murmu announced the Indian government’s commitment to establishing a permanent Artificial Limb Fitment Centre in Malawi.
Earlier in her visit, President Murmu praised the Indian community in Malawi, highlighting its role as a living connection between the two nations. She emphasized the longstanding diplomatic relations between India and Malawi, which have now spanned 60 years. Murmu noted, “These relations are historical, and we also have deep cultural ties. India values its partnership with the African continent based on mutual trust, equality, and mutual benefit. Our cooperation model with Africa is centered on utilizing local resources and building capacity according to Africa’s priorities.”
President Murmu arrived in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, on the morning of October 17, where she was welcomed by Vice President Michael Usi and other dignitaries at Kamuzu International Airport. Following a ceremonial welcome, she attended a traditional cultural performance at the airport.
This trip signifies the inaugural state visit from India to Malawi, with President Murmu joined by Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar and Members of Parliament Mukeshkumar Dalal and Atul Garg.
