India has appointed Pranay Verma as its next Ambassador to the Belgium, with concurrent accreditation to the European Union. The announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs marks a key development in India’s diplomatic outreach to Europe.
A senior Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1994 batch, Verma is currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh. He is expected to take up his new assignment shortly, succeeding Saurabh Kumar, who recently completed his tenure in Brussels.
Verma’s appointment comes at a significant juncture in India’s engagement with Europe, particularly in the context of the recently concluded India-European Union free trade agreement. The agreement is expected to enhance bilateral trade by reducing tariffs across a wide range of sectors and strengthening economic integration between the two sides.
As Ambassador, Verma will play a crucial role in advancing India’s strategic, political, and economic interests in Europe. His responsibilities will include engaging with EU institutions and facilitating the ratification process of the trade agreement, which involves extensive legal and procedural steps.
The Embassy of India in Brussels serves as a key diplomatic hub for engagement with Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union, making the role particularly significant in shaping India’s European policy.
With over three decades of diplomatic experience, including previous assignments such as Ambassador to Vietnam, Verma brings extensive expertise to the position. His experience in handling complex international relations is expected to support India’s expanding global partnerships.
The appointment underscores India’s continued focus on strengthening ties with Europe, with an emphasis on trade, investment, and strategic cooperation in an evolving global landscape.
