On the day when the opposition’s no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government was accepted by the Lok Sabha speaker, an old video of the Prime Minister’s 2019 remarks in the Lok Sabha resurfaced and went viral. In the video, PM Modi humorously advises the opposition parties to be well-prepared to bring another no-confidence motion in 2023.
During his reply in Lok Sabha to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address in February 2019, prior to the general elections, PM Modi had said, “I want to send you my good wishes that you prepare so much that you get a chance to bring a no-confidence again in 2023.”
Today, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla acknowledged a no-confidence motion initiated by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi against the Narendra Modi government. The date and time for the no-confidence motion debate will be determined later and communicated to the House, as stated by the speaker.
Before admitting the motion, Om Birla conducted a head count of members supporting its admission. Congress parliamentary party chief Sonia Gandhi, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, and other INDIA alliance members stood up in support.
It’s worth noting that a no-confidence motion can be proposed by any member of the Lok Sabha and requires the backing of at least 50 members for it to be accepted.
The 2019 video also showed PM Modi responding to an opposition member, attributing the decline in Congress’ tally from over 400 to nearly 40 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls to ‘arrogance.’ In contrast, he highlighted the BJP’s rise from two seats to forming a government independently, crediting it to the party’s spirit of service.
