Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Austria last evening, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the nation since Indira Gandhi’s trip in 1983, over four decades ago. Before arriving in Austria, PM Modi completed a significant visit to Russia.
During his stay in Vienna, PM Modi is scheduled to meet Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and hold discussions with Chancellor Nehammer. Additionally, both leaders will address business leaders from India and Austria to explore ways to deepen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation on various geopolitical challenges.
PM Modi is also set to interact with members of the Indian community in Vienna today. Ahead of his visit, he emphasized that the shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law will serve as the foundation for an increasingly close partnership between India and Austria.
In 2021, at the COP26 summit in Glasgow, Prime Minister Modi had discussions with then-Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg, who currently serves as the country’s Foreign Minister. Recently, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra described Austria as a key central European country with significant opportunities for bilateral cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, renewable energy, high technology, start-ups, and the media and entertainment sectors.
