Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a human-centered approach to artificial intelligence (AI), introducing the ‘MANAV’ vision at the India-AI Impact Summit 2026. Emphasizing responsibility alongside innovation, the Prime Minister called on the global community to guide AI in ways that prioritize humanity.
Speaking at the summit, Modi noted that the world faces both great opportunities and responsibilities in the AI era. He stressed the importance of considering not just what AI can achieve in the future, but how it is used today. Drawing parallels to nuclear technology, he highlighted that AI, like other transformative innovations, can either benefit society or cause harm depending on its direction.
The MANAV framework, Modi explained, reflects India’s human-centric philosophy for AI. The acronym stands for Moral & Ethical Systems, Accountable Governance, Accessible and Inclusive, Valued and Legitimate, and Vision for Humanity. Modi underscored that AI should follow ethical principles, be governed transparently, promote inclusivity, adhere to legal and societal standards, and ultimately enhance human welfare.
Transparency, the Prime Minister emphasized, is essential for safe AI development. He encouraged openness, collective innovation, and shared AI resources to ensure global benefit. Highlighting emerging risks, Modi called for international standards to authenticate digital content and prevent misuse, citing deepfakes and manipulated media as potential threats to trust and stability.
Child safety within AI systems was also a priority. Modi proposed that AI ecosystems should be curated to protect young users, much like school curricula are carefully designed.
Reflecting on India’s approach, he contrasted fear and opportunity, asserting that India views AI as a source of potential and growth. He highlighted the country’s talent, energy, and clear policy direction, noting that three Indian companies launched AI models and applications at the summit, showcasing the innovative capabilities of India’s youth.
With MANAV, Prime Minister Modi positioned India as a leader advocating for ethical, transparent, and globally cooperative AI development, emphasizing that technology must serve humanity rather than dominate it.
