Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the grand 84-foot statue of Lachit Borphukan, the famed general of Assam’s Ahom Kingdom, renowned for defeating the Mughals. Lachit Borphukan’s victory in the Battle of Saraighat halted Mughal expansion in Assam.
The project, overseen by the Assam government, not only involved erecting the statue but also included the establishment of Lachit and Tai-Ahom Museums along with a 500-seat auditorium. The initiative aims to honor Lachit Borphukan’s virtues, raise awareness about his legacy, promote tourism, and create employment opportunities.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma joined Prime Minister Modi at the unveiling ceremony. CM Sarma expressed gratitude to PM Modi for dedicating the “Statue of Valour” to the people of India in Jorhat.
During his visit, PM Modi also performed the ‘tarpan’ ritual in Jorhat. Earlier, he enjoyed an elephant ride at Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its rich biodiversity and thriving wildlife population.
PM Modi’s visit to Assam, including the roadshow in Kaziranga, marked by cultural events and a warm reception from locals, is significant in the context of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Kaziranga, known as Assam’s crown jewel, boasts diverse wildlife, including rhinos, birds, dolphins, and tigers, making it a vital destination for conservation and tourism.
This two-day visit underscores the BJP’s campaign efforts and preparations for the forthcoming elections, anticipated to take place between April and May this year.
