Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the strong connection between India and France during his address to the Indian diaspora at the La Seine Musicale in Paris on July 13. Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome that made him feel at home, PM Modi stated, “Wherever we go, we create a ‘mini-India’.” He highlighted that the world is shifting towards a new world order and acknowledged that India is increasingly sought after in areas such as climate change, supply chains, counter-terrorism, and counter-radicalism.
PM Modi made significant announcements during his speech, including the extension of India’s Unified Payment System (UPI) to France. He revealed that UPI transactions will soon be available from the Eiffel Tower, enabling Indian tourists to make payments in Indian rupees. This move simplifies financial transactions for Indian travelers, eliminating the need to carry foreign currency or forex cards. France joins the UAE, Nepal, and Bhutan as countries that have already adopted India’s UPI.
Furthermore, PM Modi announced an extension of the post-study work visa for Indian students pursuing master’s degrees in France. Previously, Indian students were granted a two-year visa, but now they will receive a five-year post-study work visa. The Prime Minister also unveiled plans to open a new consulate in Marseille, France, to enhance diplomatic ties and provide better services to the Indian community.
Addressing concerns regarding Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards, PM Modi informed the audience that issues related to OCI cards in Reunion Island have been resolved, and OCI cards are now being issued there. Similar efforts will be made in Martinique and Guadeloupe.
PM Modi urged the Indian diaspora residing abroad to invest in India, highlighting the country’s rapid progress toward becoming a developed nation. He encouraged them to seize the opportunity to invest early, emphasizing the favorable ratings India has received from various agencies. The Prime Minister also extended an invitation to the diaspora to visit India.
