Mizoram is set to witness a historic milestone as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the state’s first railway station at Sairang on September 13. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Lalduhoma during the 15th Conference of the Mizoram Police Service Association in Aizawl.
Sairang Railway Station will serve as the terminus of the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang broad-gauge line, a project that began in 2008–09 and has been hailed as a remarkable engineering feat. The line includes 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and the country’s tallest railway pier standing at 104 meters. After clearing multiple safety trials conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, passenger operations are expected to begin this September.
Officials highlighted that the new railway link will reduce transportation costs, ease passenger travel, and provide a significant boost to Mizoram’s economy, agriculture, and tourism. The state government also intends to develop Sairang into a world-class station with advanced amenities and extend long-distance services, including potential Rajdhani Express connectivity.
Chief Engineer Vinod Kumar, who led the Bairabi-Sairang project, explained that the rail line was sanctioned in 2008–09 and later elevated to the status of a National Project. Land acquisition was completed by 2014, after which Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone. Despite severe challenges posed by Mizoram’s long monsoon season, frequent landslides, and a largely migrant labor force, the project was executed with designs capable of withstanding extreme conditions.
Kumar emphasized the durability of the infrastructure, noting that the bridges, including the second-highest in Northeast India, were built to last over a century. “We are proud that the project is being completed during PM Modi’s tenure. It stands as a key achievement in the government’s 11 years of infrastructure development,” he said.
The Bairabi-Sairang line connects Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, with India’s rail network through Silchar in Assam, creating a long-awaited link for the state. Initiated on November 29, 2014, when Prime Minister Modi remotely launched the project, it is now nearing full operational readiness.
Despite the region’s challenging terrain and weather, the successful completion of the railway line demonstrates the central government’s strong commitment to improving connectivity and infrastructure in the Northeast. With its inauguration, Mizoram is poised to take a major step forward in integrating with India’s expanding rail network.
