Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday conveyed his greetings on the occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, underscoring the vital role played by Indians living abroad in strengthening India’s global standing while remaining deeply connected to their cultural roots. Through a message shared on X, the Prime Minister described the Indian diaspora as a living link between India and the wider world. He noted that overseas Indians have contributed meaningfully to the societies they live in while continuing to uphold Indian traditions, values, and identity.
Referring to members of the diaspora as “rashtradoots,” or national ambassadors, Modi acknowledged their role in promoting India’s culture on the global stage. He also highlighted the steps taken by the government to foster closer ties with Indians overseas, reinforcing a sense of belonging and partnership despite geographical distance. According to the Prime Minister, the trust that the global community places in Indians abroad reflects positively on India itself.
Echoing these views, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also paid tribute to overseas Indians in a separate post. He described the diaspora as a bridge connecting continents and cultures, carrying forward India’s traditions, languages, and values across the world. Jaiswal recalled the historical importance of the day, noting that it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India in 1915 after years in South Africa. Gandhi’s return, he said, symbolised the power of the overseas Indian experience in shaping the nation’s future.
The government has, over recent years, introduced several initiatives aimed at strengthening engagement with the global Indian community. These efforts recognise the diaspora’s contributions across diverse fields such as business, technology, education, culture, and diplomacy. Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas serves as a dedicated platform to celebrate these contributions while reaffirming the enduring relationship between India and its people abroad.
Observed annually on January 9, Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas holds both symbolic and historical significance. It honours the achievements of overseas Indians and acknowledges their role in India’s growth and global influence. By commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India, the day also highlights how the experiences and ideas of Indians abroad have historically contributed to shaping the nation’s destiny.
Through his message, Prime Minister Modi reinforced the idea that the Indian diaspora remains an integral part of India’s story, playing a crucial role in carrying its civilisational spirit across borders while strengthening bonds with the homeland.
