Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted how the ascent of C P Radhakrishnan—from a modest rural upbringing to becoming the Vice President of India—demonstrates the true spirit and strength of Indian democracy. He expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan’s experience, humility, and long-standing commitment to public service would help foster productive debates and constructive leadership in the Rajya Sabha.
Elected in September as India’s 15th Vice President, Chandrapuram Ponnusami Radhakrishnan assumed the role of the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha. As the Winter Session of Parliament began, Modi extended warm congratulations and said he hoped the Upper House, under Radhakrishnan’s guidance, would engage in meaningful deliberations and take decisions that shape the nation’s progress.
Modi noted that Radhakrishnan’s life story—rooted in a farming family and shaped by decades of social work—embodies the essence of democratic opportunity. “Politics was only one part of your larger mission. Service has been your purpose from youth until now,” he said.
The Prime Minister described Radhakrishnan as a leader who has consistently remained above formalities, emphasizing his qualities of patience, dedication, and sincerity. Modi shared two life-altering experiences that defined Radhakrishnan’s outlook: surviving a near-drowning accident as a child and escaping a bomb attack aimed at former Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani’s yatra. Both incidents, Modi said, strengthened his resolve to dedicate himself even further to national service.
Modi also recounted a personal gesture from Radhakrishnan—his decision to stop eating non-vegetarian food during a visit to Varanasi. Modi clarified that the choice was personal, but as the MP from Varanasi, he appreciated the sentiment behind it.
The Prime Minister reflected on Radhakrishnan’s early years, praising his student-era commitment to public awareness and his courage during the Emergency, where he chose resistance over convenience. Modi said the Vice President’s organizational skills, leadership qualities, and ability to unite people have been evident throughout his political and social journey.
Calling it a proud moment for the nation, Modi said Radhakrishnan’s rise serves as an inspiration to millions and reinforces the belief that dedication and integrity can take a person from humble beginnings to the highest constitutional roles. He concluded by congratulating him once again as he presides over his first Parliament session.
