Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing his first public rally after Chhath Puja in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, announced that the central government is actively pursuing UNESCO recognition for Chhath Mahaparva under the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. Speaking to a large crowd, PM Modi emphasized that Chhath is not only a celebration of devotion but also a festival symbolizing equality and social unity.
The prime minister said, “This is my first visit to Bihar after Chhath Puja, a festival that has now gained international recognition. Our government is working to ensure that Chhath gets the global heritage honor it deserves.” His statement was met with applause from the audience, highlighting the emotional and cultural resonance of the festival among Biharis.
PM Modi also launched a scathing attack on opposition parties, accusing the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) of disrespecting the sanctity of the festival for political gain. Without naming anyone directly, he said that while he listens to Chhath songs—even recalling being touched by one sung by a girl from Nagaland—Congress and RJD leaders mock the festival, calling it mere “drama.” Modi added that the people of Bihar would not forgive such insults.
The remarks came a day after Congress MP Rahul Gandhi criticized the prime minister, alleging that he would do “anything for votes,” including dramatizing Chhath rituals. The war of words between the parties underscored the intensifying campaign atmosphere in Bihar ahead of the state elections.
During his speech, PM Modi also criticized the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan, claiming that it represents “five Ks” — katta (weapons), kroorta (cruelty), katuta (resentment), kushasan (misgovernance), and corruption. He cited that during RJD’s previous tenure, as many as 35,000–40,000 abductions were reported, calling it an era of lawlessness.
The rally in Muzaffarpur marked the launch of the NDA’s campaign for the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025. PM Modi expressed confidence that the people of Bihar would ensure a decisive victory for the BJP-led alliance. He is also scheduled to address rallies in Chhapra and other districts as part of the campaign trail.
