Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on Friday by paying homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat’s Ekta Nagar. The tribute came on the occasion of Patel’s 150th birth anniversary, with the Prime Minister highlighting the Iron Man’s unparalleled contribution to the unification of India and his enduring message of national integrity.
Arriving early in the morning, PM Modi offered prayers and floral tributes at the world’s tallest statue, located along the Narmada River. He also witnessed the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas parade and led the oath of unity ceremony, reaffirming India’s commitment to Patel’s vision of a strong and united nation.
During his address, Modi hailed Sardar Patel as the architect of India’s unity, noting that after Independence, Patel achieved the seemingly impossible task of merging over 550 princely states into a single nation. “For Sardar Patel, the dream of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ was paramount. He didn’t just write history—he created it,” the Prime Minister said.
He also met members of Sardar Patel’s family in Kevadia a day earlier, expressing his admiration for Patel’s leadership. “It was a privilege to meet his family and remember his monumental contribution to India,” Modi shared on X.
However, his speech also took a sharp turn toward contemporary politics. The Prime Minister criticized the Congress party’s post-Independence decisions regarding Kashmir, calling them “missteps” that led to decades of turmoil. He stated that weak and indecisive policies allowed parts of Kashmir to fall under illegal occupation, fueling terrorism and instability. “Congress adopted a compromising stance toward terrorism, drifting away from Sardar Patel’s firm principles. We continue to uphold his vision of strength and sovereignty,” he asserted.
Ahead of the ceremony, PM Modi released a video tribute celebrating Patel’s life and achievements, calling him the driving force behind India’s integration. “His legacy continues to inspire generations toward building a united, self-reliant India,” he said.
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, celebrated annually on October 31, honors Patel’s enduring contribution to India’s unity, serving as a reminder of his belief in a cohesive and resilient nation.
