Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with a bipartisan delegation from the United States Congress, led by Congressman Michael McCaul, during their current visit to India. The delegation includes former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who joined the group today. Previously, they had a meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama at his residence in Dharamshala.
Pelosi shared her thoughts on the meeting via a social media platform, expressing that it was an honor to join a bipartisan Congressional delegation to meet with His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, in Dharamsala, India. She emphasized the delegation’s strong reaffirmation of Congressional support for the people of Tibet.
Other members of the delegation include US Representatives Gregory Meeks, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Nicole Malliotakis, Ami Bera, and Jim McGovern. They also had discussions with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra on Wednesday evening, where Jaishankar acknowledged their unwavering support for the strategic partnership between India and the US.
In a statement on X, Jaishankar expressed, “Pleasure to meet with the bipartisan US Congressional delegation led by @RepMcCaul. Thank @SpeakerPelosi, @RepGregoryMeeks, @RepMMM, @NMalliotakis, @RepBera and @RepMcGovern for joining. Acknowledge their robust and ongoing backing for the strategic alliance.”
The US Congressional delegation arrived in India earlier this week and was welcomed by officials from the Central Tibetan Administration at Kangra Airport in Himachal Pradesh. Following their arrival, they traveled to Dharamshala to meet with the Dalai Lama.
During their visit, Congressman McCaul presented the Dalai Lama with a framed copy of ‘The Resolve Tibet Act,’ a bipartisan legislation aimed at bolstering US support for Tibet. Last week, the US Congress passed this bill, urging Beijing to engage in peaceful dialogue to resolve issues regarding Tibet’s governance.
Before their meeting with the Dalai Lama, the US delegates participated in a public felicitation ceremony at the main Tibetan temple, where children showcased Tibetan culture. At the conclusion of their meeting, the Dalai Lama presented a Buddha Statue to Speaker Pelosi, according to the Dalai Lama’s office.
