Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed two-time Olympic medallist and javelin champion Neeraj Chopra, along with his wife, Himani Mor, at his residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg on Tuesday. Sharing highlights of the meeting on social media, PM Modi mentioned that they discussed various topics, including sports, and described the interaction as “great.”
Neeraj Chopra, a trailblazer in Indian athletics, became the first Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field during the Tokyo 2020 Games. He maintained his top form by claiming gold at the World Athletics Championships in 2023 and a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Earlier this year, he made history again by surpassing the 90-metre mark in the Doha Diamond League with a throw of 90.23 metres, setting a new personal and national record. PM Modi had congratulated him on this milestone, calling it a moment of national pride.
In recognition of his accomplishments and exemplary service, Chopra has been honored with multiple awards, including the Padma Shri, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal. On April 16, 2025, he was also conferred with an honorary commission as Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army by President Droupadi Murmu, having previously served as a junior commissioned officer in the Rajputana Rifles since 2016.
During the 2025 season, Chopra competed in several international events, winning four competitions, including the Paris Diamond League and the Neeraj Chopra Classic held in Bengaluru. PM Modi’s interaction with Chopra underscores the nation’s appreciation for his relentless dedication, discipline, and achievements in sports and military service.
The meeting highlighted both Chopra’s contribution to Indian athletics and his commitment to national service, reinforcing his status as an inspiration for aspiring athletes and citizens alike.
