On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with US Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard in Washington, DC. Their discussion centered on strengthening India-US relations. The meeting took place shortly after Gabbard was sworn in as DNI in a White House ceremony.
PM Modi extended a warm greeting to Gabbard, congratulating her on her new role. Sharing the encounter on social media, he wrote, “Met USA’s Director of National Intelligence, @TulsiGabbard, in Washington DC. Congratulated her on her confirmation and discussed various aspects of the India-USA friendship, a cause she has always strongly supported.”
The visit marks PM Modi’s first trip to the US since President Donald Trump began his second term. Upon arrival, Modi was received by India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and other dignitaries. He later proceeded to Blair House, where members of the Indian American community gathered to welcome him with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Modi, Modi.” Expressing his gratitude, Modi wrote on X that he appreciated the enthusiastic reception despite the winter chill.
Ahead of key meetings, PM Modi emphasized the importance of India-US cooperation. “Landed in Washington DC a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting @POTUS Donald Trump and building upon the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,” he posted. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Modi’s agenda includes discussions with President Trump, US cabinet members, and industry leaders.
Blair House, where Modi is staying, is more than just a residence—it symbolizes the strong diplomatic ties between India and the US. Before departing for his visit, Modi noted that this trip would build on past collaborations and lay the foundation for deeper cooperation in technology, trade, defense, energy, and supply chains.
Modi and Trump have remained in close contact, having spoken twice since November 2024. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar attended Trump’s inauguration and later met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He also participated in the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ meeting in January 2025.
PM Modi’s US visit follows his three-day trip to France, where he met US Vice President JD Vance. The India-US relationship, established as a strategic partnership in 2005, was elevated to a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership during Trump’s visit to India in 2020.
