Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday personally congratulated Vice President-elect CP Radhakrishnan after his decisive victory in the vice-presidential polls. The meeting took place soon after the official announcement, with Modi extending warm wishes and appreciating Radhakrishnan’s long political journey and dedication to public service.
Radhakrishnan, the ruling alliance’s nominee and current Governor of Maharashtra, clinched the vice-presidential post with a clear margin. Out of the votes cast in the electoral college comprising both Houses of Parliament, he secured 452, while the opposition’s candidate, retired Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, managed 300. The result reaffirmed the National Democratic Alliance’s numerical advantage, but the wide margin further strengthened their political standing.
With this victory, Radhakrishnan becomes the 15th Vice President of India, succeeding Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down in July citing health reasons. His win also marks a significant moment as he becomes the third leader from Tamil Nadu to hold the constitutional office, underlining the state’s continued contribution to India’s national leadership.
President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her best wishes, emphasizing that Radhakrishnan’s decades of experience in public life would contribute meaningfully to India’s progress. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan joined in extending their congratulations, highlighting his unwavering commitment to democratic traditions and governance.
Leaders across party lines noted that Radhakrishnan’s journey—from his early days with the Jana Sangh and the BJP in Tamil Nadu, to his current role as Maharashtra’s governor—reflects a lifetime of service rooted in discipline and dedication. His election was widely expected due to the NDA’s majority, but the overwhelming support further consolidated his credibility as a seasoned statesman.
As Modi felicitated him, the moment underscored not only the personal bond between the Prime Minister and the Vice President-elect but also the government’s confidence in Radhakrishnan’s ability to uphold and strengthen democratic values. His new role is expected to carry forward India’s constitutional traditions with dignity while contributing actively to the nation’s development.
