Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the 9th International Yoga Day celebrations at the United Nations headquarters in New York. In his address, he emphasized the inclusive and global nature of yoga, stating that it is a living and dynamic tradition originating from India. Modi highlighted that yoga is not bound by copyright, patents, or royalty payments. He emphasized its adaptability to different age groups, genders, and fitness levels, as well as its portability, allowing people to practice it anywhere. Yoga can be practiced individually or in groups, with or without a teacher. Modi stressed that yoga unifies people of all ethnicities, faiths, and cultures, making it universally accessible.
Modi expressed gratitude for the worldwide support in designating June 21 as International Yoga Day. He described yoga as a way to unite individuals and promote well-being, mindfulness, and harmony with oneself and nature. Following his speech, Modi joined hundreds of participants in yoga exercises on the UN headquarters’ North Lawn.
The event drew attendees from nearly 180 countries and the Indian diaspora, with long queues forming outside the venue. Notable figures such as Csaba Korosi, President of the United Nations General Assembly, and New York Mayor Eric Adams also addressed the gathering.
Modi’s visit to the US included meetings with prominent figures from various fields, including Elon Musk, Paul Romer, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Ray Dalio. He highlighted the positive changes happening in India, driven by the youth.
In the coming days, Modi will travel to Washington D.C., where he will be welcomed at the White House and meet with President Joe Biden, Vice-President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. He will also address a joint session of the US Congress and engage with CEOs, professionals, and the Indian diaspora.
