This evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 37th National Games at Goa’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. During his address, the Prime Minister emphasized India’s progress and achievements across diverse fields, marking unprecedented milestones. He highlighted government initiatives like Khelo India and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which have created a supportive ecosystem for the nation’s athletes. Notably, Khelo India has seen success, with over 125 players performing well in the Asian Games.
PM Modi stressed the direct link between a country’s sports sector development and its economic progress. He applauded Indian athletes for their exceptional performance at the ongoing Asian Para Games, setting records and showcasing the nation’s sporting prowess. He expressed confidence in India’s talent and its ability to excel even under adverse conditions. The government’s efforts in sports infrastructure, selection processes, training, and changing public attitudes towards sports have contributed to improved athletic performances. He noted that the sports budget has tripled compared to nine years ago, indicating the government’s commitment to sports.
Furthermore, PM Modi expressed optimism about India’s readiness to host the 2036 Olympics. He described the National Games as a reflection of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat” and commended the Goa government for its preparations.
The extravaganza, scheduled from October 26 to November 9, is set to welcome around 10,000 athletes from various disciplines across the country. The event was attended by dignitaries including Goa Governor Sreedharan Pillai, Chief Minister of Goa Dr. Pramod Sawant, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, and Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha. Renowned artists, including Sukhwinder Singh, performed at the event, adding to the festivities.
