India’s first stretch of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Corridor is ready to be opened with the inauguration of the 17 km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional RRTS. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the priority section from the Sahibabad RapidX Station. He will also flag off the RapidX train connecting Sahibabad to Duhai Depot, marking the launch of RRTS in India.
In March 2019, the Prime Minister initiated the construction of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor, aligning with the government’s goal to enhance regional connectivity. This innovative RRTS project is designed to offer high-speed commuter rail service, with a top speed of 180 kilometers per hour. It will provide intercity transportation every 15 minutes, with the flexibility to increase frequency to as little as every 5 minutes as needed.
The National Capital Region (NCR) plans to develop eight RRTS corridors, with three prioritized for Phase-I: Delhi – Ghaziabad – Meerut, Delhi – Gurugram – SNB – Alwar, and Delhi – Panipat. The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS project, costing over $3.6 billion, will connect Delhi to Meerut in under an hour, passing through urban centers like Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar.
This new transportation system will offer secure, contemporary intercity commuting solutions, integrating seamlessly with railway and metro stations, as well as bus services. These transformative mobility solutions are expected to boost economic activity in the region, improve access to employment, education, and healthcare, while also reducing traffic congestion and air pollution, in alignment with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan.
