Addressing the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the crucial need for a worldwide framework governing the responsible development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Modi warned against potential abuses such as deepfakes, data theft, and exploitation by terrorists. He urged participants, including diplomats and ministers, to exercise caution and prioritize safety in the advancement of AI.
Emphasizing the transformative nature of AI, Modi underscored the importance of transparency, advocating for efforts to make AI systems as transparent and bias-free as possible. He stressed the need to convey to people globally that AI is for their benefit and future, ensuring no one is left behind in its advancements.
The inaugural ceremony, attended by dignitaries such as Hiroshi Yoshida, the first minister for policy coordination in the Japanese minister of internal affairs, marked India’s chairmanship of GPAI for 2024. Modi urged the formulation and enactment of a global AI framework within a specified timeframe, comparing it to treaties and protocols for international affairs.
Modi articulated the necessity for an inclusive approach to AI development and regulation to foster more equitable outcomes. He highlighted the importance of participation from the Global South, emphasizing that AI development should align with human values and democratic principles. Modi concluded by acknowledging the need to preserve space for emotions and ethics as AI advances efficiency.
