Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi on Friday, marking a historic return of the prestigious literary event to the national capital after 71 years. Running from February 21 to 23, the three-day conference honors Marathi literature’s legacy while addressing contemporary literary themes.
During the inaugural ceremony, PM Modi was honored in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Sharad Pawar, acclaimed Marathi writer Tara Bhawalkar, and Sammelan president Usha Tambe.
Established in 1878 by Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade, the literary gathering has a rich history. In 1954, India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, attended its opening as the chief guest. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) emphasized that this year’s event highlights the enduring significance of Marathi literature while exploring pressing topics such as language preservation, translation, and digital transformation. The Sammelan follows the government’s recent recognition of Marathi as a classical language.
The event includes a dynamic lineup of panel discussions, book exhibitions, and cultural performances, along with engaging sessions featuring prominent literary figures. A symbolic literary train journey from Pune to Delhi, carrying 1,200 participants, underscores the unifying power of literature.
With over 2,600 poetry submissions, 50 book launches, and 100 bookstalls, the Sammelan brings together scholars, authors, poets, and literature enthusiasts from across India, celebrating the vibrant spirit of Marathi literary traditions.
