PM Modi Highlights Record Solar Capacity Growth in IndiaPrime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s achievement of recording its highest-ever annual solar capacity addition, marking a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy journey. According to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, India added around 45 GW of solar capacity in 2025-26, nearly doubling the pace seen in the previous year. The expansion reflects the country’s strong commitment to energy security, sustainable development, and its long-term vision of a greener economy.
The rapid growth has been driven by large-scale solar deployments in key states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, which have played a central role in accelerating India’s transition to a cleaner electricity system. A notable highlight was the addition of 6.65 GW of solar capacity in March 2026 alone, the highest-ever in a single month.
India has now crossed 150 GW of installed solar capacity, reinforcing its position among the fastest-growing renewable energy markets globally. The milestone reflects improvements across the ecosystem, including domestic manufacturing, grid integration, and supportive policy frameworks.
The continued expansion of solar energy is expected to drive investments in related sectors such as transmission infrastructure, battery storage, and green hydrogen. It is also likely to create export opportunities in solar modules, inverters, and associated components.
Institutional confidence in the sector remains strong, with Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited contributing significantly to the development and financing of renewable projects. India’s broader renewable energy capacity has also seen steady growth, strengthening its global standing in clean energy deployment.
The achievement highlights India’s accelerating shift towards sustainable energy, positioning it as a key player in global efforts to combat climate change while ensuring long-term energy security.
