Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for Johannesburg on Friday to take part in the G20 Summit, marking a significant moment as the gathering unfolds in Africa for the first time. Before leaving New Delhi, PM Modi described the event as a “special summit,” emphasizing the symbolic importance of the continent hosting the world’s most influential economic forum.
In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister expressed his enthusiasm about participating in the high-level meeting. He noted that a wide range of pressing global challenges will be discussed during the summit and highlighted his intention to engage with several world leaders on the sidelines. Modi added that the summit holds particular historic value because Africa is serving as the host, especially after the African Union was inducted as a permanent G20 member during India’s presidency in 2023.
PM Modi stated that this year’s theme — “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability” — reflects continuity from the earlier summits in New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro. He shared that he will present India’s views shaped by the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” and the broader message of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” underscoring India’s advocacy for inclusive growth and global cooperation.
Another highlight of the visit will be the Prime Minister’s interaction with the Indian diaspora in South Africa, home to one of the largest Indian-origin communities outside India. Modi described this upcoming engagement as both meaningful and emotionally significant, noting the community’s deep cultural ties and longstanding contributions to South Africa’s social fabric.
In addition to the G20 deliberations, PM Modi will participate in the 6th IBSA (India-Brazil-South Africa) Summit. Leaders of the three democracies are expected to assess progress in their cooperation framework and explore fresh areas to expand their trilateral partnership, especially in the context of Global South priorities.
During his stay in Johannesburg, the Prime Minister is also set to hold several bilateral meetings with global leaders. These discussions will focus on reinforcing India’s strategic partnerships, boosting economic and technological cooperation, and advancing shared objectives on multilateral platforms.
Modi emphasized that the visit is an opportunity not only for diplomacy and strategic dialogue but also for reaffirming India’s commitment to global partnerships based on equality, sustainability, and collective progress.
