Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Saturday that India’s greatest obstacle is not any external adversary but its deep reliance on foreign nations. Addressing a gathering in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, he emphasized that dependence undermines strength, dignity, and global standing.
“We have no significant enemy worldwide. Our only true enemy is dependence on others,” Modi said. “The larger our reliance, the greater our national failure. The future of 1.4 billion Indians cannot be left in foreign hands.”
The Prime Minister linked his remarks to the broader vision of Atmanirbharta (self-reliance), highlighting it as the foundation for India’s progress. According to him, self-reliance is not just an economic necessity but a matter of pride and a prerequisite for long-term stability and peace. He reiterated that a self-reliant India is the only “cure for a hundred sorrows.”
His comments came at a time when US policies have put additional strain on India. Just a day earlier, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation enforcing a $100,000 fee on H-1B visa applications, effective September 21. India, which accounts for 71% of all H-1B holders, is expected to bear the heaviest impact. Meanwhile, the US continues to maintain steep 50% tariffs on Indian imports, adding to trade tensions.
Turning his attention to domestic issues, Modi criticized the Congress party for neglecting India’s shipbuilding sector during its tenure. He argued that the reliance on foreign vessels led to the collapse of the local shipbuilding ecosystem. Currently, India depends on foreign ships for 90% of its trade, costing the country nearly $75 billion annually—an amount nearly equal to India’s defense budget.
“Instead of strengthening Indian shipbuilding, earlier governments chose to pay rent to foreign vessels,” he said, noting that such dependency has drained national resources and weakened strategic sectors.
During his visit, Modi also laid the foundation stone for development projects valued at more than $4.1 billion (₹34,200 crore). Later in the day, he is set to inaugurate the new Mumbai International Cruise Terminal at Indira Dock, a project expected to bolster India’s maritime infrastructure.
Through his speech, the Prime Minister reinforced a clear message: India must prioritize self-reliance to secure its future, reduce vulnerabilities, and command respect on the global stage.
