In a rare and significant diplomatic statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly condemned Israel’s attack on Qatar, describing it as a violation of the country’s sovereignty. Modi’s remarks came during a phone call with Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, as tensions in the region escalated following the strike in Doha.
The Prime Minister expressed India’s deep concern over the incident and emphasized that disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Stressing the importance of avoiding further escalation, Modi declared that India stands firmly for peace and regional stability, while rejecting terrorism in every form. Posting on X, he reaffirmed that India supports efforts aimed at preventing violence and fostering security across the Middle East.
During their conversation, Modi also commended Qatar’s proactive role in promoting peace, particularly its mediation in Gaza aimed at achieving a ceasefire and facilitating the release of hostages. His strong words mark a departure from India’s usual diplomatic stance, which has traditionally emphasized Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas while simultaneously urging protection of civilians and adherence to humanitarian law.
According to reports, Modi affirmed India’s solidarity with Qatar and strongly denounced what he called a “cowardly Israeli attack” that had targeted the residences of Hamas leaders. He labeled it a serious violation of international norms and a direct threat to the security of Qatar and neighboring states. Modi further stated that India categorically rejects any aggression that undermines the safety of Qatar and destabilizes the wider region.
Sheikh Tamim, in response, assured that Qatar would take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and protect its people. He thanked Modi for his support and India’s clear stand in expressing solidarity with Doha.
The conversation reflects the growing importance India places on its ties with Qatar. Relations between the two nations were upgraded to a strategic partnership earlier this year during Sheikh Tamim’s visit to New Delhi. Their personal rapport was also highlighted last year when the Amir pardoned eight Indian Navy veterans accused of espionage, a gesture that significantly strengthened trust.
India’s statement comes amid mounting international criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza and its broader military campaign. Earlier at the SCO summit, New Delhi had joined other nations in condemning Israeli and US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Modi’s words signal not just a balancing act in India’s foreign policy but also a clear recognition of Qatar’s crucial role in Middle East diplomacy.
